Visual Novel Review: Memoirs of an Angel

9/30/2014

Memoirs of an Angel is a GxB fantasy visual novel released in 2010.

Enter Tyraca, a mythical land devastated by war.
As the nation's former princess, Zuleika, it's up to you to take back your throne from an evil tyrant,
restore peace and prosperity to your people, and find love with your "Prince Charming."

After the death of the mighty Emperor Osirus, the nation of Tyraca is in chaos. Its former princess, an angel named Zuleika, is now faced with a choice: will she bend to the authority of the new emperor, Osirus' younger brother, Nefferon; or will she give up her title and leave her old life behind?

When a mysterious elven assassin shows up to take her life, she is forced to make a decision that will affect the fate of the kingdom. Regardless of what she chooses, the young angel's life will never be the same.

Do you guys know how much I loved this visual novel?!
Because I did. Hahaha. I really enjoyed playing this. You should really try it. Hahaha. :)

Ahem. But first, on with the formal visual novel review format... hahaha.

Likes:
- The story was well-rounded, I suppose. It wasn't that unique as a fantasy title, and to be honest, it did fall a little short in the story development aspect, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, nonetheless.

- I loved the characters here, especially the obtainables! There are "4" romance-able guys, and none of them disappointed me. Hahaha. All were interesting and quirky... and fun. Oh, and unique. Despite being a fantasy title, this is still a romance visual novel, first and foremost, and I think it portrayed the bachelors successfully. Each of them had that special spark, though the Pyralin knight struck my heart more than anyone else.

- Minigames! Woohoo! <3 I always love extras in games.

Dislikes:

- Why did it have to be so short? :'( I want more of this! Haha.

- There were some typos and a few errors with the programming too. The mistakes weren't super noticeable, but there were a few ones that did bother me a bit. One of the things I really noticed in the programming is the scripting of the sprites. I assume there must be something wrong there because in some parts, the sprites cut out too early or their lower parts-- the cut off parts-- were revealed. Kinda took me off the story for a while every time I saw one of those mistakes.

Thoughts:

First of all, I can say that I loved, loved, loved this visual novel! It's far from perfect and there are a lot of flaws, but it was a very enjoyable read. And although the story development wasn't very nicely tackled in my opinion, I think it still did the VN some justice with regards to the quirky and very lovable characters.

And speaking of characters, I really, really adored each one of them! I actually felt really connected with them in a way, and for a visual novel, that kind of connection is what I'm looking for. I mean, how will you enjoy the game if you don't feel attached to the characters, right? Well, Memoirs of an Angel did a good job with that.

Also, there are some minigames included, which is definitely a plus for me!

To cut this short, I have to say that you should definitely try out this game. The script and the programming are far from perfect, but the lovable characters and the story can make up for those shortcomings pretty easily.

And by the way, I hear there's a remake in progress right now! Stay tuned. =)

Actually, I sort of left it out on purpose since this review is still pretty much incomplete. I don't even know where I put my screenshots for this game, so I might play it again one of these days.

Plus, there's a remake coming up! :D I have to update my reviews for other remade games here too, so... yeah, updated ratings will be included. =)
