Short Visual Novel Reviews: Fear Not, Clerkegard, Wedding Vows

7/21/2014

Hello~

Okay, so I have a couple of VNs to review, and since they're all pretty short, I'm just gonna put them in one post. :) Coincidentally, all of these are actually kinetic novels.

Like I said, these are pretty short so I won't follow my usual post format for this blog. ^^

Anyway... on with the games!

Fear Not

A little boy getting over his fears of riding a bike. A short, light-hearted story.

fear not kinetic novel review

First of all, I have to admit that the main thing that got me interested in this kinetic novel is the German translation. Hahaha. As some of you may know, lately I've been on the lookout for German visual novels in order to practice my extremely poor and fast diminishing German. Hahaha.

I was actually quite disappointed when I found no option to play it in German. *sigh* I'm not sure how exactly the game detects which language to use. Nevertheless, I did like this story!

It was actually super cute, especially the simple, child-like art. The story is extremely simple and very short, though I guess it did get its message across. Fear not.

*goes into a reflective mood* I never actually learned how to use a bike. But unlike the boy here, it wasn't because I was scared or anything! My parents are over-protective and they didn't allow me to use bikes in fear that I might hurt myself if I did. So... I grew up not knowing how to bike, and fearing bike rides. Hahaha. A cousin once rode with me behind him on his bike, and you won't believe how much I screamed. *blushes* Anyway, after reading this, I thought to myself, "He's right. There's no reason to fear anything."

"The chance to fear not."
I get the feeling that different people will have different opinions and different thoughts after reading this kinetic novel, but for me, the message is pretty simple.

There's no reason to fear anything, because love overcomes everything.

Kinda sappy and cheesy, but that's what I personally think. :)

Anyway, you can download this game here. The German version is available here.

Clerkegard

A boy successfully shoplifted the new convenience store. What does he encounter?

Clerkegard is a really short linear story with... a few choices that won't really affect anything major in the game. There is one extra ending though. *wink*

I have to admit, I was a bit confused with this story. Haha. Wait, actually, I think I was confused majority of the time. But some stuff just clicked into place near the end and... haha, I realized that it's actually pretty cute, if only it wasn't so vague and confusing.

Even though it was so short, I was amused by the characters and their reactions towards each other. I was also fascinated by the boy with glasses. *wink* I really like stories like this, concerning the present and the future and stuff. (Am I the confusing one now? Haha.)

However, for such a short game, I found a couple of minor errors and awkward wordings.

By the way, can you really shoplift a store? Or... do you maybe shoplift from a store? Or at a store? I am genuinely confused, especially since English is not my first language. Haha. Can anyone tell me what proper preposition to use here? :)

Anyway... I really wish this was a longer game. Hahaha. :) It's got a lot of potential actually, if only the story was presented in a clearer way. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the little twist near the end.

Also, if you get the extra ending, you'll probably get a better picture of what happened. Personally, I loved both endings. :) So cute. Haha. Oh, if only this was a longer game!

You can read Clerkegard online here.

Wedding Vows

Wedding Vows is an anthology of 14 short snippets portraying the love story of Lawrence and Rebecca, two childhood sweethearts who grew up together and got married. It shows their evolving relationship from childhood until old age, and the special moments that bind them together. A tribute to marriage and {idealized} love with a vintage Americana feel.

This is actually a pretty old kinetic novel release in 2009, which is around 5 years ago. :)

However, I am a firm believer that beautiful things never get old, so I decided to give this a try. ^^

The story is not in chronological order, instead it's presented as a list of wedding vows. Clicking one will show you a scene in the lives of our protagonists. You get to see different stories in both perspectives, so technically this game is both GxB and BxG.

Art-wise, it was cute. Haha. The only real art we get here are the little drawings on the top that show who the speaker is. :) There are a few different drawings showing the different ages of the Rebecca and Lawrence when that scene happened.

As for the music... well, there was only one, haha, Pachelbel's Canon. It's a common piano piece, so I immediately recognized it the moment it started playing. Despite having only one track though, it didn't feel repetitive to me at all. :) Well, Canon is definitely the kind of music you could play over and over, so... yeah. Haha.

Anyway, story-wise, well, I feel that this is where this "game" truly shines! I loved it. Haha, I actually cried a little... wait, no, I cried a whole lot. Haha. The story was so sweet... and thoughtful... and heart-warming... and simply beautiful. I swear. Haha. Just read it!

Wedding Vows is a beautiful story of the joys, the sorrrows, and the wonder of not just marriage, but also true love. If you're feeling down or heartbroken, or if you're starting to feel hopeless about love, then do read this please. I'm pretty sure the heartwarming story will change your views about true love, even just a little bit.

I wish to experience a love like this someday. Who knows, maybe I've already found the person I will spend the rest of my life with, right? *winks*  I'm pretty certain that whoever finds a love like this is a truly lucky and blessed person indeed.

My final thought? I don't think I'll ever be deleting this from my laptop. ^^

Here are the download links for this game:

Okay, that's it! :)

Those three are all pretty short so they're easy to play in between your busy schedules.

Enjoy playing!
