Gerald Ko - We Are Legend

6/12/2013

Umm, haha, okay, sorry, I just can't get over Gerald Ko's song, We Are Legend. You know, the one I first heard 8 days ago on the visual novel A2 ~ a due ~ by Arowana, Nellie, and Azure on LSF.  Hahaha. I just super-duper loved that game, and this theme song. I think it suits the story well. Look at these lyrics:

We are Legend
Gerald Ko

Your thoughts, straight to my soul
Your eyes, all I need to know
Wavelengths only we can see
Language we can understand

We're not even human
That earth is somewhere far away
So strange, this air I'm breathing
Come near, I'll lose my way

This world is a foreign place
Everyone's at a different pace
We're running in our own race
You and I

We are legend, from long ago
We are fearless, by ourselves
We're a story that time will tell through the ages
We are something
We are legend

When you're gone, I go with you
If you're lost, I cannot be found
If you're wrong, I cannot be right
Foolish, the things we do for love

We can change the world
We won't need anything
Or anyone, to make this happen
Our song will play forever

This world is a foreign place
Everyone's at a different pace
We're running in our own race
You and I

We are legend, from long ago
We are fearless, by ourselves
We're a story that time will tell through the ages
We are something

We are legend, from long ago

We are fearless, by ourselves
We're a story that time will tell through the ages
We are something
We are legend

Your thoughts, straight to my soul
Your eyes, all I need to know
Way place only we can see

P.S. Thank you for the corrections, Mandy and scorlight.. ^^
(If you haven't played A2 yet, be warned! Spoilers ahead! Also, please play it, it's wonderful. Hahaha.)
I am over-thinking things, I know I am. Hahaha. But I am also procrastinating, and this is a good way to do so. Besides, I'm already finished with my Literature and Filipino assignments. Hahaha.

Did you know that I've always loved "dissecting" songs? :) Well... now you know. ^^

Your thoughts, straight to my soul
Your eyes, all I need to know
Wavelengths only we can see
Language we can understand

Ye Lin Hao is from China. Sona Song is... well, technically, she's from China, since she's Chinese, but she doesn't know how to speak it. There's a language barrier between them. How do they communicate? Through gestures, drawings, eyes. Feelings.

Sometimes words aren't needed, and I do agree. You don't really need words to say how happy you are. A smile would do. When you're scared while watching a horror film, you can cover your eyes. When you're mad, you can furrow your eyebrows. When you're thinking, you can either close your eyes, or you can stare off into the distance. Words aren't needed, right?

But words are also important. Because with emotions, you can't really be sure. Sona and Hao had a rough start because they couldn't understand each other. But there was a language they could understand. Music.

We're not even human
That earth is somewhere far away
So strange, this air I'm breathing
Come near, I'll lose my way

This song was originally inspired by Twilight, so yes, Bella and Edward aren't really human, but in this case... I think we can safely say that this stanza simply means that Hao is, figuratively, in a "different world". America is worlds away from China after all. Almost everything is different, I think. The language itself is completely different, the people, the culture. And everything is strange and different to Hao who doesn't even speak a word of English in the beginning. Who was it who helped him "cope" anyway? Sona.

This world is a foreign place
Everyone's at a different pace
We're running in our own race
You and I

The world is a busy place. Even though the orchestra worked as one, they also had their own lives to handle. They had their own businesses to mind. And poor Hao, who wanted to make their concert the best ever, was caught up in it all. Not only does he not understand their language, he does not understand why they couldn't give it their all. Why they couldn't practice for four to six hours straight each day. He couldn't understand that at first. And it's very, very strange to him.

We are legend, from long ago
We are fearless, by ourselves
We're a story that time will tell through the ages
We are something
We are legend

Personally, I believe that each and every person in the world is a legend on his/her own. Each of us are unique, and all of us have talents that set us apart from someone else. No one is exactly the same as us. There's always something that we can do that others can't. And Sona, Hao, and the whole orchestra are not exceptions to that rule. Sona used to play in a band. She loves the guitar. Hao is a conductor who was a student of Sona's father. The members of the orchestra all play different instruments. They're all legends, in their own little ways.

When you're gone, I go with you
If you're lost, I cannot be found
If you're wrong, I cannot be right
Foolish, the things we do for love

I think this one has something to do about the A2 in conducting that happened in the end. On the day of the concert, Hao broke  his... I can't remember, I think it was his left arm, so he couldn't conduct anymore. But they didn't want to cancel the concert and waste all the hard work of the whole group, so they decided to go for it. How? Hao, (Hehe. How. Hao. Okay, sorry.) ahem, Hao and Sona decided to make it an A2, a due, where two of them would be conducting. Sona's right hand was broken as well, so... haha, they did it together. <3

Of course, if one of them was wrong, then both would be wrong, etc. And I think they did that for love. Not necessarily romantic love though. It could be just love, in general. Love for music, love for their orchestra, just pure love. (Although what Sona did in the end was due to real, romantic love though. Hihihi.)

We can change the world
We won't need anything
Or anyone, to make this happen
Our song will play forever

I think... this is quite simple to explain. Sona and Hao "changed the world" for everyone involved. How? (Hehe.) Sona changed Hao's world. He did fall in love with her, right? And she transformed him into a loving, caring, sweet, and not-so-strict guy. Well, maybe he really was all those things before, but still, she managed to "unmask" him. And in return, Hao made Sona realize how much her father truly loved her. *sniff*sniff* And he made her feel special and accepted, in a world where she felt so alone.

And even the orchestra members' worlds were changed! They got better with their musical instruments, and they learned to accept Sona and Hao too. They actually loved them! And I find them so adorable. Hahaha. :)

In short, I think, maybe the message is simple. Maybe. To me it just means that all of us will leave a mark in this world. It doesn't have to be big, and it doesn't have to be controversial, or popular, or famous, but all of us will have something to give to this world. Our song will play forever.

We are legend.

  6. Ummm.... There's sth wrong in the chorus. Gerald didn't sing the 2nd line, it should be like this:

We are legend, from long ago
    We are fearless, by ourselves
We're a story that time will tell through the ages
    We are something
    We are legend
