Visual Novel Review: Pirate Mermaid

3/24/2013

Have I ever told you guys how much I love the water?

No?

Then I'm telling you now. Coz this game is now on my list of my favorite visual novels ever!

pirate mermaid visual novel

My favorite fairytale has always been The Little Mermaid. And this story is a twisted version of that. Remember how in that tale, Ariel, from the Disney version, is so fascinated with the human world? And she collects lots of treasures because she is just so interested in them. And how she found this handsome prince, and she goes to a sea witch to turn her into a human? Now, in Andersen's version, if she doesn't get true love's kiss in a week, she will turn into bubbles and disappear.

In this visual novel it's the other way around. The pirate captain, which I named Roanna after myself (I didn't think that Captain Ran sounded good, so I added a few letters. Teehee), grew up hearing tales about wonderful treasures and mermaids. She is determined to fulfill her father's wish and lifelong dream, which is to acquire the mermaids' treasure. But things don't go according to plan and Captain Roanna was thrown out of her own ship and into the rough seas below. Fortunately, someone saves her and she ends up in an island with golden sand. She meets a sorcerer who turns her into a mermaid in exchange for a red vial so she could go into the mermaid kingdom and steal their treasure. Of course, if she doesn't succeed, there's always a true love's kiss to hang on to.

- The graphics are to die for. Such amazing art, especially in the CGs! And I love the logo.

- Tne concept is cool. Twisting a classic fairytale into something like this?! Kudos to the story-writer and scriptwriter as well!

- The protagonist, despite being a greedy, rude, bitchy pirate who tries to take advantage of everyone she meets, is quite lovable.  I personally dislike her rotten attitude, but hey, she's a pirate, she's just acting her part. Which is very nicely written by the way. And besides, you get a chance to "improve" her attitude as well.

- That opening deserves its own 'like' in this review. I loved it! I love the soundtrack, I love the background story, I love how it was delivered. The music reminded me of some old lullaby from when I was a small kid.

- The effects were awesome! The rain, the lightning, the magic... even the sound effects were great! Much work was obviously put into this, and as a player/reader, I really appreciate that.

- The soundtracks were lovely. Especially in the opening. It made me feel like I was traveling in the depths of the ocean. Teehee. :")

- For someone who loves the water and all its mystery just like me, this visual novel is a dream come true.

Dislikes
- Maybe it's just my gadgets, but this game kept lagging on both my laptops. It's not all the time, but sometimes they stopped responding and there was that traceback thingy. I forgot to copy and paste it. Hahaha. I'll add it here the next time it happens.

- The choices were a bit too hard to figure out. Is it just me, or was it a bit too hard to decide? Amost every choice shows her bad side. Hahaha. Does this protagonist even have a good side? Kidding. =)

Notes
I love how it started. And I love the story concept. It was... say, refreshing. The graphics are simply amazing. But for me, the best thing about this visual novel is the music.

I downloaded this demo last Feb 10, 2013, but I played it just now. I don't know why I waited before I played this. Well, partly that's also because it just kept lagging. But it's really good, and it was worth all the frustration! :)

I can't wait for the full version to come out! You know another amazing thing? It's going to be released for free! Yippie. If it was commercial I probably wouldn't be able to play it because I don't have an online account to buy it. Bummer. But you know, this game is so good it deserves to be commercial. :") I'm not complaining though!

Please, just play this! You won't be disappointed. I rate this a 10/10. :) Download the demo here if you haven't played it yet!

If you have, then feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below. :)
